Below are just a few favorite spots, natural wonders, cultural focal points and simply just nice places to visit, rest and relax. Zugspitze 2,962m, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Germany's highest mountain with inspiring views towards Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany. Take either the cog wheel train or cable car to the top. Exhibits are often displayed in a beautiful windowed gallery with views down to the ski area. Lift tickets vary dependant upon season and time of day and are around 35 Euro. Eibsee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
A peaceful mountain lake nestled against the dramatic faces of the Zugspitze. In the evening, alpenglow illuminates the shimmering water and massive craggy peaks. During summer, swim in the refreshingly clear waters. An easy footpath around the lake takes 1.5 hours by foot or 40 minutes by bike.

 

Benediktbeuern Monastery, Benediktbeuern
A short 30 minute drive north and you have a host of cultural sightseeing. This monestary founded in 730 is one of the oldest Benedictine Monasteries in Bavaria.

 

Riessersee, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Located a short 30 minute walk from the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort the Riessersee is best seen in the morning with light reflecting off the Waxenstein and a mirror reflection off the water. Our Alpine Adventure hosts also can guide you to the lake as part of the Coffee and Cake by the Lake tour.

 

Eisenhower Museum
A scenic drive away, the Eisenhower Museum offers many exhibits and shared stories about this president. Open June - November, Sunday to Thursday from 1400 - 1700 hours or by appointment. 08822-4536, Oberammergau.

 

Walchensee, Germany
A scenic drive away, the Walchensee is a windsurfing and kite surfing hot spot. Pleasant beer gardens line the shores while you soak in the peaceful lake setting. Couple this 200m deep lake with a visit to Benediktbeuern or Glentleichen for a nice tour.

Rodelbahn Eckbauer, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Summer sledding down the mountain on a wheeled sled and paved course. Reasonably priced and fun for the whole family.

 

Winter Olympic Stadium, Garmisch-Partekirchen
Site of the 1936 Winter Olympics opening ceremonies and the yearly celebrated ski jumping competition of the prestigous four hills tournament January 1st.

Glentleiten Freilicht Museum, Grossweil
Historical Bavarian farmhouses have been relocated from all over the area to create this open air working farm museum. Peruse through the farmhouses and watch local workers farm the land with techniques used in the 1600's. A 45 minute drive north near the Kochelsee and Kochelsee Hydroelectric dam, a marvel of engineering in its time.

Violin Museum, Mittenwald
Mittenwald is considered one of the world's premier violin centers. People from all of the world come here to study the skill of handcrafting violins.

Andechs, Ammersee
Andechs Monastery is situated on a hill overlooking the Ammersee. Peaceful beer gardens and Bavarian restaurants are the thing to do. Located north one hours drive.

 

Munterhaus, Murnau
Gabrielle Munter and Wassily Kandinsky bought a house in Murnau in 1909 where they created many of their most famous paintings. This museum is set to its original interiors and the view to Murnau looks very much like it did in her paintings.

 

St. Martin Hutte, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Commonly refered to by American's as the Halfway House, St. Martin's is located halfway up the Kramer mountain. This hut has a dominating view of the Zugsptize massive and Garmisch village below and serves delicous Bavarian meals. During winter the hut is the destination for a thrilling sled ride down to the valley. The walk up is steep but on a paved path and will take 3 hours round trip. Guided trips are offered through Alpine Adventures in summer.
