What is the difference between European Highlights Itinerary and Castles and Palaces Itinerary?
Both packages include the same Edelweiss accommodations, transportation, hospitality, and number of guided excursions. The primary differences are the destinations visited and the level of physical activity involved.
European Highlights – Offers a diverse mix of cultural, scenic, and historic destinations throughout Bavaria and neighboring European regions. This itinerary generally involves a more relaxed pace of walking. However, guests should be comfortable walking at least one mile throughout the day, including on cobblestone streets and uneven pathways. A reasonable level of mobility and balance will help guests fully enjoy the experience.
Castles and Palaces – Explores some of Europe's most magnificent castles, royal residences, medieval fortresses, and historic towns. This itinerary offers a more active sightseeing experience, with additional walking, stair climbing, and changes in elevation. Many historic sites feature multiple flights of stairs, steep pathways, uneven surfaces, and narrow passageways. Some locations may have limited wheelchair accessibility or present challenges for guests with mobility limitations.
Guests considering Castles and Places should feel comfortable navigating stairs, inclines, and uneven terrain. We encourage all travelers to consider their personal mobility and comfort level when selecting the European Escapes experience that is right for them.
Are meals included?
Daily breakfast is included throughout your stay. Your package also features a welcome reception, a Bavarian dinner, one tour lunch, and a farewell dinner.
Lunches and dinners not specifically included in the itinerary are at your own expense. This gives you the flexibility to discover local restaurants and regional specialties.
Are admission tickets included?
Admission tickets for attractions included in your scheduled guided excursions are covered by the package.
Additional activities, optional attractions, and experiences during free days are not included unless otherwise specified.
Can I skip a guided excursion or substitute another tour?
Participation in individual excursions is optional. However, unused excursions cannot be exchanged, substituted, or refunded.
What can I do during the two free days?
The free days are yours to enjoy! Explore Garmisch-Partenkirchen, relax at Edelweiss, visit nearby attractions, or arrange an additional excursion through Alpine Adventures.
Our Vacation Planning team can help you explore available activities and transportation options. Additional costs may apply.
When will I receive my detailed itinerary?
Your itinerary will be available on our website for you to review at any time prior to your arrival. A final copy of your itinerary will be provided upon arrival for your review. Should any significant changes be made to the online itinerary, such as swapping one tour with another or adjusting a scheduled free day, confirmed guests will be notified in advance of their arrival. Tour schedules and destinations are subject to change due to weather, attraction availability, transportation, or other operational considerations.
Who is eligible to participate in European Escapes?
European Escapes is designed for eligible military retirees and their sponsored guests.

Can I access the installation with my retired military ID?

Sponsored guests participating in European Escapes must be at least 18 years old.
Please coordinate your group's eligibility and identification requirements with the Vacation Planning Center before arrival.

Each eligible sponsor may sponsor up to four guests without qualifying military identification. Contact the Vacation Planning Center for assistance with multiple-room reservations.

A deposit equal to 50% of the total package price is required at the time of booking.
The remaining 50% is due upon arrival.
What is the cancellation policy?
European Escapes has a separate cancellation policy from standard Edelweiss hotel reservations.
Cancellations more than 60 days before arrival qualify for a refund of the deposit. Cancellations within 60 days of arrival result in forfeiture of the 50% deposit.
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect against unexpected changes to your plans.
If Edelweiss must cancel the package due to government restrictions or an operational closure, guests will receive a full refund.
Should I purchase travel insurance?
Yes. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, travel delays, and other unexpected circumstances.
Because European Escapes requires a substantial deposit and international travel, insurance can provide valuable peace of mind.
Review the policy carefully to understand covered reasons for cancellation and any exclusions.

Please review your travel dates, guest information, package details, and payment terms carefully.

We recommend allowing sufficient time for immigration, baggage collection, and travel between terminals.
Do I need a passport or visa to visit Germany?
U.S. citizens traveling for tourism generally do not need a traditional visa for short visits to Germany and other Schengen Area countries, subject to applicable entry requirements.
Passport validity requirements apply, and guests are responsible for ensuring their travel documents meet the requirements of every country on their itinerary.
The European Union is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) for visa-exempt travelers. Requirements and implementation dates may change.
Before traveling, review the official information at https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias and https://travel.state.gov.
Are vaccinations required to enter Germany?
Entry-related health requirements can change. Guests should review current German government travel guidance before departure. You are responsible for meeting any applicable health and entry requirements for Germany and other countries visited during your package.

European Escapes includes a standard guest room at Edelweiss Lodge and Resort with two queen beds. Room upgrades are not available as part of this package.

Check the voltage rating on your devices before traveling. Appliances that operate only on 110–120V may require a voltage converter.

Please note that Edelweiss is a cashless resort. All on-property purchases and additional amenities can be charged to your guest room or paid for using a major credit card.
Most larger businesses in town accept major credit cards, but smaller restaurants, markets, and shops may prefer cash. We recommend carrying some euros for everyday purchases.

All on-property purchases and additional amenities can be charged to your guest room or paid for using a major credit card.
How physically demanding are the guided excursions?
European Escapes is designed for guests who enjoy sightseeing and exploring historic European destinations. However, many European attractions are located in pedestrian-only districts with cobblestone streets, stairs, hills, and uneven surfaces.
Guests should be comfortable walking at least one mile over the course of a sightseeing day, sometimes on uneven or inclined terrain.
Some destinations, including Neuschwanstein Castle, involve steep approaches and additional walking. Transportation options may be available at certain attractions, but they do not eliminate all walking or stair requirements.
Tour guides maintain a reasonable group pace, but guests should consider their individual mobility and endurance before booking.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
Not all tour buses, historic attractions, and sightseeing routes are wheelchair accessible.
Many castles and historic buildings have stairs, uneven surfaces, or limited accessibility features.
Please contact the Vacation Planning Center before booking if you have mobility limitations or accessibility requirements. Our team can help you better understand the demands of the itinerary.
What if I need medical care during my stay?
Medical services are available in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area.
Guests are responsible for understanding their health insurance coverage while traveling internationally, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation.
TRICARE beneficiaries should review their overseas coverage before departure at https://www.tricare.mil.
We recommend bringing sufficient prescription medication for the duration of your trip, along with any necessary medical documentation.
What should I pack?
Comfort is key when exploring Europe. We recommend comfortable walking shoes with good traction, layered clothing, a lightweight rain jacket, a small daypack, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, a European electrical plug adapter, your travel documents, and any required medications.
Even in summer, temperatures in the Alps can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations.
Can I rent a car during my stay?
Yes. Rental cars are available through providers at Munich International Airport and in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area.
If you plan to drive, review German driving requirements, insurance coverage, parking arrangements, and any restrictions that apply to your rental agreement.
Our Vacation Planning Center can help direct you to local rental-car information.
Can I book additional excursions?
Yes! Alpine Adventures offers a variety of recreational activities and excursions, subject to seasonal availability.
Your two scheduled free days are ideal opportunities to explore additional destinations or simply enjoy the resort and surrounding Bavarian Alps.
Can visiting retirees use the Exchange, commissary, or military post office?
Access to certain U.S. military facilities in Germany is restricted by international agreements and individual eligibility.
Visiting retirees should not assume that installation access includes shopping privileges at the commissary or Exchange, military postal services, or fuel-ration benefits.
Contact the appropriate installation office before your visit if you have questions about specific privileges.
Still have questions?
Our Vacation Planning Center is happy to help with reservations, package details, eligibility questions, and travel planning. We look forward to welcoming you to Edelweiss Lodge and Resort for an unforgettable European Escapes adventure.
