FOUNDING OF THE ARMY

On June 14, 1775, the Continental Congress passed the following resolution:

Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen [sic], be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia; … [and] that each company, as soon as completed [sic], shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army.

With this resolution, the Continental Congress adopted the New England Army of Observation, making it a “continental” army — a united colonial fighting force — that could represent all 13 colonies with the addition of the troops from the three middle colonies. The Continental Army thus became America’s first national institution.

BEGINNING OF ARMED FORCES RECREATION CENTERS

The roots of the Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRCs) were planted in 1945, shortly after the end of hostilities in Europe. Recognizing the need for rest and recovery among the troops, Army Special Services officers began repurposing prewar tourist facilities to support morale and well-being. News of this alpine retreat spread rapidly, and soldiers from across the U.S. Forces Europe Command made their way to southern Germany for rest and relaxation. The AFRCs had one mission in mind:

"To provide adequate rest and recreation facilities at reasonable prices for authorized personnel assigned to or stationed in the USEUCOM area of responsibility"

Today, there are four AFRCs located around the world: Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Germany, Hale Koa Hotel in Hawaii, Dragon Hill Lodge in South Korea, and Shades of Green in Florida. The AFRCs offer affordable, vacation experiences designed specifically for the unique needs of the military community—providing safe, welcoming spaces where service members can create lasting memories.

OPENING OF EDELWEISS LODGE AND RESORT

Twenty years ago, a vision to create a world-class destination for the military community in Europe became a reality. In 2000, the U.S. Army, with support from Congress, approved plans to build a modern Armed Forces Recreation Center in the scenic Bavarian town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

By 2004, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort officially opened its doors, consolidating older AFRC facilities—including Chiemsee and the General Patton Hotel—into one unified resort offering enhanced services in a stunning alpine setting.

As we celebrate 20 years, we reflect with pride on two decades of welcoming service members, retirees, and families. From restful escapes between deployments to cherished vacations, Edelweiss has been a place where military life is honored, and connections are renewed. We look forward to continuing that mission for years to come.
